Halloween Costume Ideas Costumes For Adults, Teens and Kids

Halloween is a festive and fun holiday. Although it’s known for being a time for children, it can also be a lot of fun for adults as well. Whether you are going to a costume party, staying home to hand out candy or dressing up to accompany kids on a trick-or-treating quest, there’s a lot of fun to be had throughout Halloween. One way to make the holiday really special for the one you love is giving him or her a present. Gifts are especially nice when they’re unexpected, and nobody is going to be expecting a present on Halloween, as it’s not a tradition.
Make sure to keep the gift a secret until you go to reveal it on Halloween. If the recipient knows about it ahead of time, it takes away the surprise element that’s so special about a Halloween gift. Avoid even giving hints. If you are in doubt about what your someone special would want for a gift, try to find out by asking open-ended questions. You may even try to tell her that you have started an Amazon wish list and ask if she has one. If you do that, do it well in advance of the holiday, though. That question can be interpreted as a hint, if you have a really perceptive loved one. When all else fails, think of the hobbies of your loved one. That should reveal an easy and meaningful present.
One fun gift idea for anybody (except those who hate horror films) is a gift pack of classic scary movies. You can put together your own gift pack. Some instant classics and some popular horror films that have stood the test of time include “The House on Haunted Hill,” “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir,” “The Canterville Ghost,” “Zombieland,” “Practical Magic,” “Poltergeist,” “Scream” and “The Shining.” There are dozens of great ones. If you want to get a laugh, you may also slip in a couple of simply bad movies in with the horror movies, such as comedies that are supposed to be funny, yet are painfully unfunny.
Another fun gift idea is a costume of your loved one’s hero. If someone is older, one may be hesitant to go as a favorite celebrity or fictional hero. However, that’s likely a secret desire on some level. For instance, if your loved one is a big fan of “Anne of Green Gables,” give her a special Anne costume as a surprise, and also have a Gilbert one for yourself. Have a fun Halloween date planned, where going in costume is expected and appropriate. Not only will the experience be forever remembered as romantic, thoughtful and special, but your loved one will have the costume of her hero to keep as a keepsake forever.
Create a homemade card to go along with whatever gift you pick for a Halloween present. Use orange and black colors alongside the favorite colors of your someone special. Get creative. Put into words what you actually feel, and it will probably be the favorite part of your Halloween gift, no matter how grand it is.

Love her or hate her, it’s quite undeniable that dressing as Sarah Palin for Halloween will get some reactions. It’s an instantly recognizable costume, and it’s quite simple to create. You’ll want to start with the accent, an important and fun part of playing the part. Watch a few videos on YouTube to set the scene, then get started on creating your own Vice President nominee Sarah Palin costume.
Wear a medium-length brown wig if you don’t already have a hair style that can be converted into a Sarah ‘do. It should have generous bangs and be straight and shiny. One thing that can be said of Sarah is that she typically appears very well-groomed in the public eye. (The excessive shopping bills while on the campaign trail may indicate as to why…) Wear your hair straight or half-pulled back (as in the photograph).
Wear a simple pair of glasses. Simple, silver frames are fine. If you don’t need the glasses, be sure to get suitable lenses.
Make-up is essential for portraying Sarah. She always appeared to have her make-up on, yet it was natural and warm colors. Use a light base and peach blush. Beige and tan eye shadows work well to re-create the “Sarah Palin” look.
Wear a business suit for the main part of your costume. If you can work in the colors of red, white or blue into the outfit, that’s ideal. A “Proud Soccer Mom” pin might be a fun nod to the image that she aimed to portray. Get creative. Sarah is such a recognizable figure in pop culture that you can get away with a lot of putting your own spin on the costume.
Wear high heels. Although Sarah is an outdoors woman, she knows how to dress up for her political ambitions. The heels should be well-coordinated with the business suit. If you are planning on doing a lot of walking, such as trick-or-treating with the kids, fancy flats will be an acceptable alternative for the costume.
Support your costume with fun and funny props. A copy of her book “Going Rogue” with a pen in hand is an obvious choice. It will be a hit. You may also opt to carry along other things, depending on your own impressions of Sarah. Fans of Sarah will want to carry along things that accentuate the positive things that she has done and what she is believed to represent. Those who are dressing up as Sarah as a send-up of her so-called all-American image will likely want to accentuate other aspects of her public persona, such as her inability to answer about what she reads to Katie Couric, when putting the finishing touches on their Sarah costume.

Halloween may bring to mind images of blissful children stocking up on candy while parading around in adorable costumes. However, little children aren’t the only ones who get to partake in the joys of the season. People of all ages can celebrate Halloween in their own ways. For teenagers, the best way is usually a party with friends. Although many teens start to feel that they’re too old to go trick-or-treating, they may also still want an excuse to dress up in their dream costume and play make believe. That’s where the teen Halloween party comes in.
One of the things that can make a Halloween gathering for teens a huge success is a great selection of party games. You want to keep the mood fun, and you want everybody to be involved. Most teens have not yet learned the art of mingling, so a traditional party set-up is often a path to disaster. Games help everyone interact and have fun together. Just be sure to stock up on some fun prizes, so that the game winners don’t walk away empty-handed.
Bobbing for apples is a classic harvest time game. Yet, it doesn’t have to be only for children. Update the classic game with a theme. For younger teens, it can have a “Twilight” theme, as the apple is the symbolism of the relationship for Bella and Edward in the book and film. For older teens, who wins the apple can get a $5 gift certificate to the Apple store, where teens can buy music on iTunes.
Gossip is the unfortunate thing that happens among many teenagers. Turn that ugly teenage faux pas into a fascinating game. Gossip has many variations, but this one is simple. Have the teens stand in a circle. Write something Halloween-related (keeping to the Halloween or harvest time theme is essential) down on paper, then show a chosen person in the circle. All the teens must then whisper the sentence to the person on their right. When it comes back to the person you’ve selected, the person announces what the sentence was. You announce what the original statement was. There will likely be laughs all around, as the story changes slightly every time it switches hands, until it no longer resembles the truth any more. This can also help teens realize how gossip truly works.
Masquerade Madness is a fun game to play for teenagers. It’s a variation on charades. In preparation for the party, cut up a bunch of modern celebrities’ photographs from magazines and newspapers—or even print them from the web. Put all the pictures in a box. Have one teen randomly pick a picture, but she doesn’t show others. She can then quickly draw a paper plate mask of the person, write a quote of the person or act out in a charade-like manner something about the person. Set the time limit at two minutes. If someone guesses correctly within two minutes, the guesser and the imitator win a prize. Otherwise, let the guessing go on for another minute, rewarding a prize to the guesser. After three minutes, announce the person and call it a draw.
There are all sorts of Halloween games for teenagers. Almost any game can be adapted for your teenager’s preferences and what is going on and what is hip in your town.

Avril Lavigne has been a big music star since her teens. Her recent work includes the hit single “Alice,” the commercial single for Tim Burton’s upcoming 3-D Disney film, “Alice in Wonderland.” She’s probably best known for her punk rock, rebellious, rocking out look. If you want to look like a cool rock star and wear an easily recognizable costume, going as Avril is probably a great idea for you.

First of all, you want to go shopping at Kohl’s, the store which sells Avril Lavigne’s personal clothing line called Abbey Dawn. It’s full of clothes that she actually does wear or in a style very similar to what you see her wearing. She is even known to model the clothes and wear them going out. Different Kohl’s stores tend to have different Avril items, depending on what’s in stock. Therefore, you may want to hit up a few different stores to find the right Avril look for you.
Start by picking out a cool Abbey Dawn hoodie, with an animal-eared hood. Not only does Avril wear these when performing oftentimes, she also wore one as a guest-judge to “Americal Idol” in January 2010. If you can’t find your size in the Abbey Dawn line of clothing, you might want to buy a stylish hoodie from another name brand, then modify it by sewing in matching ears to it. The Abbey Dawn official line is the best way to go for an authentic Avril look, but the brand doesn’t offer a lot of diversity in clothing sizes, leaving out the plus size market altogether, unfortunately.
Next, you want to pick out a pair of shiny pants. They should match the hoodie, but you want to think “rock star” with these. You could pick out a pair of pants from the Abbey Dawn line as well, depending on what Avril look you are specifically hoping to emulate. One other choice is to wear a plaid skirt with your hoodie, opting for the look Avril had often when performing “Girlfriend.” What you wear with the hoodie is a bit more flexible, as long as it is a look that Avril has publicly sported and represents the young star/rock look. Opt for heels or boots, depending on what matches the skirt or pair of pants of your choice.
Accessorize with some spikes from Avril’s perfume Black Star. Every bottle comes with a spike ring. If you can buy a few, place them on a chain or around your finger, depending on how they fit. Abbey Dawn also offers earrings, watches and jewelry. Get what you can from authentic Avril gear to really compliment your costume.
Next, you want to put on plenty of make-up. Avril doesn’t overdo it, but she is rarely photographed without full make-up. Make sure that you have on mascara, eye shadow and some lip gloss. Then, get ready to rock out, Avril-style. Make sure to work on that punk rock attitude before making your Avril debut.

“The Wizard of Oz” characters are among the most universally known film characters in all of movie history. They were, of course, first featured in books of L. Frank Baum. Before the film, the books had also been adapted into a Broadway play for several years. However, there are notable difference between the characters in the books and in the movies. In the books, Dorothy’s shoes are silver; in the film, she has the infamous ruby slippers. Unless you are a fanatic of the book, it’s best to go with the choices used in the film, if you want your characters to be easily recognizable to fellow fans and Halloween trick-or-treaters.
For the Dorothy costume, you’ll want a blue gingham dress or pinafore. A white shirt with short sleeves should be worn underneath the dress. You often can find both of these things at a thrift shop. If you can sew, there are often very simple patterns you can use to make your own Dorothy dress. Blue gingham is a popular material in craft shops, especially for September and October. You’ll also need white socks, which cover the ankle, and sparkling ruby slippers. If nothing else is available, a pair of red flats will do. For your hair, you’ll want to wear it in two braids, tied with two blue ribbons that match your dress. Check out our full line of dorothy costumes.
For the Scarecrow costume, prepare to create the costume by gathering some hay or straw. Pine straw actually works quite well with the costume. Go to the thrift shop for some clothes that are comfortable tearing and adapting for the scarecrow look. His shirt should be dark green, and his pants should be plain brown. In the movie, he wore a black, floppy hat. A cowboy’s hat would do. A black hat that you can find will work well; stuff it with straw before placing it on the scarecrow’s head, allowing for some pieces to hang down.. Also, you want light brown face paint. Paint the entire face and neck of the scarecrow in the light brown color; his nose should be a dark reddish brown. The shirt is dark green, and there should be rope to tie loosely around his wrists, ankles and neck area, for where he used to be fixed to the wooden post in the garden to scare those crows. Straw or hay should be coming from his pant leg at the ankles and at the wrists of his short, as they are tied off. Any plain black slippers will do for shoes.
For the Tin Woodsman costume, you’re going to need a good amount of safe silver face paint. You’ll also need silver spray paint (not to be ever used on the person, obviously, but for the materials.) Spray paint an old oil funnel with the sliver paint. Do this outdoors, then leave it to dry on a porch or patio for a couple of days. This will be what lies on the head of the Tin Woodsman. Make sure to choose one that’s appropriate for the size of the person who will be wearing the costume. The mask for this costume will be the face paint itself. For the body of the Tin Woodsman, your creativity and what you have at your disposal will come into play. If you have a space suit costume, you may opt to adapt it. Any silver costumes that you may have can usually be adapted to fit this unusual character. If all else fails, consider using tin foil as a wrap around a straight shirt and pants. It can be easily molded, while observing the pictures of the Tin Woodsman or watching the film. What’s crucial is that he be all silver, and that you have a heart sticker or pendant to place on his heart, symbolizing the heart that he had all along.
For the Cowardly Lion costume, there’s no way to fake that costume, except to use a lion’s costume. It doesn’t have to necessarily be an official cowardly lion costume. Any lion or lioness costume can be easily adapted. You may even opt to rent one at a local costume shop. Standing amidst Dorothy, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodsman, he’s sure to be recognized as the courageous Cowardly Lion.
If you want a Glenda in the mix, be sure to bring out an old pink prom or bridesmaid dress. Spray lots of glitter glue to it. Curl the lady’s hair (or put a blond, curly wig on her head), and give her a wand.

This year’s favorite costume idea for twins: Maverick and Goose from the movie Top Gun. A fun costume with no dreaded head gear for kids, but the aviator costume glasses can be tricky. Tip from the parents use elastic to keep the costume glasses on the kids head. We especially like Goose’s mustache.
Can you hear Kenny Loggins singing Highway to The Danger Zone.

Without a pirate themed box office hit since Hook, dressing up as pirates waned in popularity, but all that changed since Johnny Depp’s role and reprisal in the Pirates of the Caribbean series left many a young lady swooning for swashbuckling scallywags. Just ask Brandon Pinto who was fired by Disney because just the sight of him in his Captain Jack Sparrow costume drove young girls wild. Yo, ho, yo, ho, the pirate life indeed. So man the sails while I navigate us through the ins and outs of pirate costumes.
Unlike some other popular Halloween costumes that have a certain amount of irony sewn into them, any one can be a pirate: adults and children alike. Even the ladies are getting in on the action and not just as wenches, but as women pirates daring the open seas. Couples pirate costumes can be doubly fun. If anyone gives you guff for being “that” couple who matched, make them walk the plank!
The make up of a good pirate costume is not that dissimilar from what you normally wear, but baggier. Time for some plus size shopping starting with shirts. A baggy, white, button up shirt will do just fine. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Roll the sleeves 5 or 6 inches above the wrists and keep the top buttons of your, now pirate shirt, unbuttoned as if you were relaxing on a beach in the Caribbean.
If you cut and fray the bottom of a pair of slacks in a zigzag pattern, like clothing on the Flintstones, it will give them a worn look. Brown and black pants work best, shorts can work too, and both should be cut somewhere between the shin and knee. You don’t have to destroy your own clothes, thrift stores are some of the best places to pick up costume making materials cheaply.
Pirate boots can be really any boot, but costume boots help you make a decision fast. Ladies have a good selection of leather boots to choose from, but for guys work boots or army boots are fine. All you need now is a bandana to round it out. Solid color bandanas, especially red bandanas, are highly associated with buccaneers.
That’s the basics of a cheap home made pirate costume. Optional additions include: a wig, pirate sword, jewelry, fake parrot companion, and a large belt, but the real difference between good costumes and the best pirate costumes is attitude. No one has ever heard of a polite pirate, and how you talk is important. Use “Arrr!” as liberally as you want, substitute “me” when the grammatically correct choice is “my” and just have fun.
